As per the Indian Market Research Bureau, 80% of Indian diets are protein deficient. Frankly, I always associated protein with milk and eggs and believed having these two in breakfast fulfilled my daily requirement of protein. But when I became a mom and started meeting challenges by a fussy-eater son who is repulsed by even the sight of milk and other dairy products, I had to explore different options. That’s when I figured out the richness of Soy and the multiple health benefits of Soy Protein.
Recently, I also attended a bloggers meet organized by DuPont and Ebix India that further enlightened me on the same and talked about ‘The Power of Soy Protein’. The event marked the presence of eminent speakers like Indranil Chatterjee (Regional Product Line Manager, DuPont), Jean Heggie (Strategic Marketing Lead, DuPont) and Jigna Sheth (Nutritionist & Fitness Consultant, Mumbai) who threw light on how we can consume Soy Protein in our daily diet and how it can help in good health and well-being.
About Soy Protein
Protein, as you know, is available as plant-based protein and animal-based protein. Most plant-based proteins are considered as low quality protein as compared to animal based ones, because they lack one or more essential amino acids required for growth and development. But Soy is Different!
Soy Protein is a superior plant-based protein that contains all the essential amino acids in appropriate ratio to be considered as a high-quality protein. It is almost comparable to dairy and eggs but is much low in fat content and saturated fat. It is easily digestible and also free of cholesterol and lactose which makes it a great alternative for those who are lactose intolerant.

- They can be mixed with regular food like oatmeal, soups etc
- They can be added to beverages, smoothies, breakfast shakes, etc.
- They can be used in snacks as soy nuts, soy nut butter, soy protein nutrition bars.
- One can make soybean hummus and have it with Pita bread
- Can also opt for tofu in sandwiches and wraps or use soy chunks/granules to make burgers/patties, etc
- Regular milk can be replaced with Fortified Soy Milk and can be given to kids by adding bananas, Chocochips etc.
I had my own takeaways from the insightful event. The major one being that Soy is a complete source of protein and can be consumed across lifespan (in moderation of course). So, I am now more aware of what to include in my and my family’s diet. Plus I got to know some wonderful ideas about how to include Soy Protein in my kids’ diet which is surely going to make it easy for me to deal with with my picky-eater son.
